Earth Friendly Eating
The food we put in our mouths has a huge effect on the health of our planet. I believe that just about everything that is healthy and nutritious for your body is said to be healthy and kind to the earth. This is great news, because by implementing these easy steps, you’ll feel healthier, increase your energy levels and feel nourished at the same time you’re automatically taking care of the earth for future generations.
5 enviro-friendly eating tips
1.) Eat food as close to the way it occurs in nature, with minimal processing/cooking. The more raw foods particularly fruit and vegetables, the healthier, lighter and more energetic you will feel, and the less processing a food has undergone before it gets to your mouth, the less energy and water has been used to produce it. E.g. a packet of pasta or loaf of bread uses a lot more water and energy in the processing, cooking, shipping of different ingredients to form one item before it gets to you as opposed to fruit and veg which are picked fresh, and delivered to you with minimal or no packaging at all. So the healthiest foods available to us are good for our bodies as well as our environment… e.g. organically grown fruit, vegetables, seeds and nuts.
2.) If any of your foods, come in a bag, try and reuse or recycle as much of the packaging as possible. Get into the habit of taking your own bags when shopping and say no to plastic bags or bottles!
3.) Eat food that has been grown using traditional farming methods – organic and biodynamic farming provides nutritious foods without the chemicals that intoxicate our earth, killing off animal species and affecting the health of our population. When you eat more of these foods raw too, you actually need to eat less because of the increased nutritional content of the food. Try it and see for yourself!
4.) Drink more water and eliminate soft drinks, energy drinks and other processed drinks. Drinking filtered water from your home cuts out energy used on processing, packaging, shipping of drink products and not to mention the environmental pollution resulting from the waste too. Soft and energy drinks are perfect examples of “food” that is incredibly harmful to the body as well as our planet. Filling up bottles with home filtered water tastes better, eliminates the waste and is a lot cheaper than buying bottled water too.
5.) Enjoy food with friends and family, switch off the TV (which saves energy too!) and connect with the food and your loved ones. Chewing each mouthful slowly helps you digest the food you’re enjoying and you’re more than likely going to be nourished from less food when you just slow down. When the TV is off, you’re also likely to eat less as you’re concentrating what you’re putting into your body.
The way we take care of our body mirrors the way we treat the earth.
