My Five Favourite Foods to Cleanse the Body

Cabbage: Red, Green, Savoy. High in nutrients, vitamins and minerals, cabbage is beneficial for the health of arteries, veins, capillaries and brain function.  Eating this super veggie enhances gastrointestinal health, particularly when fermented in the form of kimchi or sauerkraut.  Eating cabbage regularly has been known to prevent cancer, promote weight loss and also protect the heart.

How to eat: Shred it up in your salads such as the Samui Salad or Kale and Cabbage Salad, make homemade sauerkraut, try this fantastic Sweet Red Cabbage side dish, works well in fresh squeezed juice too!

Leafy Greens: Silver beet, kale, rainbow chard, and spinach - simply the healthiest, most cleansing foods, best eaten raw for greatest nutritional value.  Along with a number of other health benefits, including being anti-carcinogenic and building blood, greens are rich in fibre, aid digestion and elimination, including easing constipation.

How to eat:  Shred or chop and enjoy in salads such as Popeye Salad, Silverbeet Salad and Springtime Salad, juices (and more juices) and green smoothies.

Carrots: Not only great for your eyes and for reducing inflammation, carrots are also a natural diuretic and fantastic for all kinds of bad bugs.  They help clear parasites and dysentery, eliminating bad bacteria in the gut, improving assimilation of nutrients, treating indigestion, including excess stomach acid and heatburn and stimulating the elimination of waste! Perfect for cleansing!

How to eat: Grate into salads or raw San Choy Bow, add to juices such as Good Morning Juice, chop into matchsticks for a snack on its own or with dips.

Lemon: An extremely detoxifying and cleansing fruit, lemons are an all over body and blood purifier, aid circulation and heart health, are also beneficial for removing toxins including old drug residues from the body and help to kill intestinal parasites. Lemon stimulates digestive juices and also will relieve constipation.  Lemon is also a beneficial fruit for liver cleansing and increasing vitality of the kidneys.

How to eat:  Squeeze first thing in the morning and drink with warm water.  Include it in your juice recipe, squeeze over fresh salads and veggie dishes, and use it in salad dressings.

Grapefruit:  One of my favourites, truly a super food, I pop one in just about every freshly squeezed juice.  As well as being fantastic for heart and breast health, reducing fevers, coughs and sore throats, as a cleansing fruit grapefruits are antifungal and digestive enhancing.  First thing in the morning, this fruit sets up your day and research shows that grapefruit juice eases constipation, improves digestion and can also assist in shifting excess fat.

How to eat: Add to freshly squeezed juices, peeled or sliced on its own as a snack, added to a leafy green salad such as the Avocado and Grapefruit Salad.
