No such thing as supplement trees

I was pleased to hear on Thursday night that the organic food industry has grown immensely over the past six years.  More people are becoming aware of the benefits of chemical free food.  Nearly two out of three shoppers have bought something organic in the past 12 months and organic is definitely going main stream.  I think this is so fantastic but watching the growth of organic food, I am hoping that consumers are educated in realising the good organic food from the not so good when making purchasing decisions.   I was sifting through the piles of organic junk food now available at the organic expo and would like to encourage shoppers to be discerning in where they spend their money when deciding to be healthy.

When I started shopping for organic food 4 years ago, I believed through the marketing that buying pasta, gluten free packaged snacks and low fat dairy was good for me because the ingredients were organically grown.  By eliminating these refined foods from my diet and basing my food intake on whole fresh foods (eating food not products), not only do I save money and avoid trips to the doctor, but I feel, function and look healthier too.

We all know that we are what we eat, so spending the majority of your budget on fresh foods will provide you with more energy and radiant health than consuming processed foods, including bread, pastas, refined grains and oils, sugar, flour and pasteurised dairy (even when labelled organic and most organic shops focus on these items!).   We find that you spend a lot less money on food when you cut out the packaged products and get back to eating food the way nature intended.  You are also guaranteed to feel a lot healthier on mostly raw, unrefined foods.   These are some of the reasons why you won't find processed foods on my shopping list.

In my opinion, there is nothing quite like fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds and good quality oils/fats to maintain a healthy body.  You can save money on expensive supplements which cannot be found in nature, your body struggles to recognise them as food and health compromises are likely to result from consumption.  Our muscles, bones and joints thrive on real foods to energise, nourish and protect (not protein powders)... and why consume fruit and vegetables dried in tablet form when you can enjoy them fresh?  Eating foods from nature's table will provide us with healthy, strong bodies, the way we were designed to live.  Try it out for yourself... Eat food, not products :)
