Whole Food Signatures - Beetroot
Last week’s wholefood focus was the lemon, which is a fantastic fruit for detoxification, particularly for the liver. If you have missed our whole food signature series, you can click here.
Another fantastic vegetable for cleansing is the beetroot. I used to avoid beetroot and didn’t really know what to do with it, but now it is something I really crave and enjoy. During our 7 day juice cleanse, one of the key ingredients to our juices has been the beetroot and it has various health benefits to our system.
The beetroot is a veggie that specifically targets the heart and blood. Eating it is said to have benefits to kidney stones, blood pressure, heart protection, liver and bone strengthening, cancer prevention and heavily increasing the uptake of oxygen into the body. Now that’s a super-food!
If you’re interested in the minerals and nutrients that beetroots contain: they’re loaded with potassium, magnesium, iron, beta-carotene and folate- one of the B group vitamins.
Fresh beetroot juice has a long history as a tonic for anaemia and disorders of the bladder and kidney. Beetroots have also been traditionally used to prevent gallstones and treat gout and jaundice.
During the festive season, this is one great vegetable to include in your food and juices for blood cleansing which benefits all of your organs including the liver!
Recipe ideas: grate beetroot and add in salads, chop, season and bake as you would a potato or my favourite, pop in your favourite juice blend. A beautiful cleansing and energising juice recipe includes: carrots, beetroot, lemon, apple and if you like it: ginger and a clove of garlic!
