Wholefood Signatures - Apples
As we heard from Don Tolman, from every whole food we can observe a “signum natura” (or a sign of nature). This means that particular food not only assists the whole body but it specifically targets an organ or an area to enhance its health. Quite often you can simply look at a fruit or vegetable and relate its resemblance to a body part! You can read past whole food signatures below, including onions, beetroot, and watermelon. But this week it’s all about the apple, and what a fantastic food for the entire body.
If you look at an apple, it appears in the shape similar to the heart. So it is a great heart food, but as well as this, when you chop an apple horizontally, you see at the centre the shape of a 5 pointed star, the shape your body makes when you stand with your arms stretched out! So apples are one food that targets the entire body, and as they say, an apple a day keeps the doctor away!!
Apples were known to the ancient, health conscious Essene culture as “Gods Healing Angels” due to their wide variety of benefits to the body. These include preventing constipation, heart protection, ageing gracefully, joint cushioning and protection, and healthy deep breathing, just to name a few! The apple has great symbolic meaning for many ancient cultures and has been used as the image of health as well as the symbols of ancient healing gods. As discussed above, Hippocrates, the Greek physician considered the father of medicine, used food as medicine and considered the apple to be one of the most important remedies.
Just a few reasons, to grab an apple and munch on it today!

We are currently receiving some delicious, fresh apple varieties from the Alexandras. Here is some info. about their farm: The Ellinbank farm is owned by Jason and Marg Alexandra and was established initially as a tree farm to demonstrate the viability of a farm rich in biodiversity. Fruit and timber trees were offered for sale and an orchard was established using some of the varieties on offer.
The farm has been certified organic for twenty years and today produces a wide range of apples and other fruit, including pears, peaches, plums, persimmons and nuts. Many birds find a home amongst the established trees and they provide a great degree of biological control of fruit-damaging pests.
